About Doug Smith
Professional Statement
Dr. Smith is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and native Connecticut resident. He completed medical school and residency in Philadelphia, at the busiest trauma center in the city. He did research at the Center for Resuscitation Science at Penn, and still has an interest in cardiac arrest care, as well as wilderness and austere medicine. Dr. Smith believes that everyone deserves access to top notch care when faced with a life threatening emergency, and he prides himself in caring for the members of his community in an unbiased, competent and compassionate manner. In his free time, Dr. Smith enjoys sailing, skiing and being a dad.
Get To Know Me
Why should someone choose you to care for their health?
In the emergency department, our patients often do not have the luxury of choosing their doctor when they come in, which is why we strive to provide top notch care to all who come through our doors.
What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
A compassionate look at their situation and the treatment options, and when appropriate a clear-eyed shared decision-making discussion to help patients navigate some of the most difficult decisions.
How do you spend your personal time when you're not caring for patients?
As a former collegiate rower who is currently without a boat, I've gotten into marathons and spinning in order to stay in good skiing shape. My most important title is Dad.
Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
I chose emergency medicine because we are the specialists that can manage anything and everything that's thrown our way, regardless of body system, severity or situation. We are ready 24/7, 365 days a year.
