Erika M. Flashburg, DO

Dr. Flashburg is a board-certified general surgeon and surgical intensivist. Born and raised in New Jersey, she attended medical school in her home state. Dr. Flashburg completed her general surgery residency at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia and went on to complete her surgical critical care/acute care surgical fellowship at UCONN/Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. Her clinical interests include emergency general surgery, trauma, and surgical critical care. Outside of her professional life, Dr. Flashburg enjoys spending time with her family and riding horses.

In return, I ask for honesty about their medical history and symptoms, and active participation in their care through open communication and collaboration on treatment decisions. How do you spend your valuable personal time when you’re not caring for patients?
When I'm not caring for my patients I love to ride horses and run. I also enjoy spending time outdoors hiking with my family.

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
I chose to pursue acute care surgery because it equips me with the tools to oversee every aspect of my patient's care journey, from the operating room to the ICU. This allows me to provide continuous, personalized care to each of my patients. the greatest reward for me is being able to support patients during their most vulnerable moments and guiding them on the path to recovery.
