James Sungsik Park, MD

James Park, MD, is Professor of Medicine at the Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, System Chief of Hepatology for the Medicine Service Line, and Co-Director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at the Northwell Transplant Institute. In these roles, he oversees system-wide hepatology strategy, quality initiatives, and multidisciplinary care for patients with advanced liver disease and those undergoing liver transplantation. Dr. Park earned his medical degree from the School of Medicine at the State University of New York in Buffalo. He completed his internal medicine residency at the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine, followed by the Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program (ECRIP) Scholarship in the Division of Liver Diseases at The Mount Sinai Hospital. He then pursued Gastroenterology fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and advanced fellowship training in Transplant Hepatology at The Mount Sinai Hospital. He is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). Dr. Park has clinical and research interests focusing on viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver transplantation.

How do you spend your valuable personal time when you are not caring for patients?
Outside of work, I focus on family and actively participate in community outreach events to improve disease awareness and reduce health disparities.

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
I chose transplant hepatology to prevent illness and treat complex liver diseases, including liver cancer. Most rewarding is restoring health and hope and forging lifelong, trusting relationships with patients and families.
