About Karen M. McCloskey

Professional Statement

Karen McCloskey, MD was born and raised in NJ and attended Williams College, where she played softball all four years, and was co-captain her senior year. After college, she worked in the finance industry for nearly 8 years in NYC before deciding on a career change and going into medicine. She completed her medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at NYU Langone/Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan and a fellowship in endocrinology at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. After her fellowship, Dr. McCloskey worked at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA and was a Clinical Instructor in endocrinology at Harvard Medical School.

Outside of work, she still enjoys playing and watching softball (and baseball), traveling, hiking and refinishing furniture.

Get To Know Me

Why should someone choose you to care for their health?
It is extremely important to me that my patients feel heard. I use evidence-based tools, like blood tests, imaging, etc. to help properly make a diagnosis and treatment plan, but a proper understanding of a patient’s experience is central to being able to truly care for someone’s health.

What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
The most important part of the doctor-patient relationship is respect. Respect for a person’s experiences, thoughts, questions and (to the best of my abilities) time. In return, I expect that a patient will treat me with respect, both as a doctor and as a human being.

How do you spend your valuable personal time when you’re not caring for patients?
In my free time, I like to play and watch softball or baseball (Let’s Go Mets!). I also enjoy reading, skiing, hiking and traveling. When I have yard space, I also love to refinish furniture.

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
This one’s easy – because endocrinology is the most interesting specialty in medicine! The scientific components are so complex and often interrelated, while the long-term relationships with patients are enormously gratifying.

She is very knowledgeable and kind, and she clearly explained my condition and the reasons for changing my medication. Unlike my previous doctor, Dr. McCloskey explained the differences between Reclast and Prolia, which helped me feel confident and relieved about my decision. I truly appreciated her thoughtful and thorough care.

Dr. McCloskey and all of her staff are great. They are all friendly and responsive. My only complaint is having to wait 7 months for the “next available” appointment.
