Katherine Garcia, MD

Dr. Katherine Garcia holds triple board certification in internal medicine, medical Oncology and Hematology. She completed her fellowship at NYU Long Island School of Medicine in Mineola, New York. Dr. Garcia is particularly interested in Thoracic malignancies. In addition to being dedicated to providing the latest and most individualized care for her patients, including clinical trials, she takes a holistic approach to ensure the best comprehensive care and quality of life from day one of their treatment onwards.

She has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and has been involved in numerous projects that have been presented nationally and internationally. She is an active member of both the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Why should someone choose you to care for their health?
Each patient I see has a distinct story and experience that is unique from others. I am committed to providing my patients with the best care possible while making sure they are comfortable receiving the care they need. I enjoy getting to know each person and delivering individualized care and treatment options that suit his or her needs. I aim to improve the efficacy of treatment and minimize side effects by implementing novel interventions. Furthermore, being bilingual in Spanish, I can communicate complex clinical findings to diverse patient populations and can comfortably address patients’ concerns

What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
I value honesty and compassion. My approach to patient care focuses on joint decision-making. Empowering patients with knowledge regarding their illnesses allows them to confidently take the next steps in their journey. Taking into consideration the needs of the patient, family, and caregivers is crucial. I hope for the trust of my patients.

How do you spend your valuable personal time when you’re not caring for patients?
I find pleasure in spending time with my family. My partner and I love to travel but also enjoy relaxing with a movie at home. Otherwise, I appreciate being active and working out.

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
My commitment to hematology/oncology has been longstanding. Given my personal experiences with how oncologic processes have impacted those in my life, I have always sought to be in a position to continue to help those who are faced with a generally overwhelming diagnosis. My biggest reward is establishing strong relationships with my patients and their families and guiding them through their journey.
