Lee Shapley, MD

Dr. Shapley is an internist, board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, who specializes in hospital medicine. He is dedicated to helping patients work through some of their most challenging times and values patient autonomy. He takes a special interest in working to understand an individual patient's perspective and how this shapes their care plan. Dr. Shapley has a wide variety of interests both inside and outside of the hospital from the arts to hospital administration. Outside of the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his wife, his college-aged son and his two pugs.

Why should someone choose you to care for their health?
I am a hospitalist, so most patients don't choose me! However, I believe patients should want me as their doctor because they want a physician who will advocate for their perspective and voice, while also willing to be honest and transparent in regards to their care and options.

What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
They should expect that I will listen to them and work to understand them. I don't come into the physician-patient relationship with any expectations from my patients.

How do you spend your valuable personal time when you’re not caring for patients?
I spend time with my wife, going to museums and performances and enjoying the company of friends and family.

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
I chose hospital medicine because I value being there for people during some of their hardest times. I find it a privilege to be in that position.
