Marcelo F. Cassini, MD

Dr. Cassini is a pathologist, board-certified in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. His medical degree was obtained in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, followed by a residency in surgery and urology. After his Master of Science degree and PhD from the University of Sao Paulo (USP), he moved to the U.S. as a postdoctoral associate at Yale School of Medicine. After 3 years at Yale, he worked for one year at New York University (NYU) as a research fellow. He completed his pathology residency training at New York Medical College (NYMC) / Westchester Medical Center (WMC) and did his fellowship in cardio-pulmonary pathology at New York University (NYU).

Why should someone choose you to care for their health?
It is really difficult to believe that patients may choose a specific hospital to be treated based on its pathology physicians. As pathologists, we give the necessary and fundamental support to clinicians and surgeons to work with confidence and reliability, based on up-to-date skills and using state-of-art tools for diagnostic and prognostic criteria of diseases.

What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
Commitment to the patient’s health problem, using up-to-date skills and state-of-art tools to make the right diagnosis, helping the clinicians/surgeons to establish the best course of treatment, and respecting each patient as an individual and unique human being.

How do you spend your valuable personal time when you’re not caring for patients?
Dr. Cassini enjoys spending time with his family. He also loves to travel, watch movies and sports playoffs in general, and appreciate good food with a glass of red wine.

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
Pathology nowadays is not a detached subspecialty giving names or classifying diseases as benign or malignant anymore. Modern pathology now studies the pathway in which a specific tumor grows and can lead to a specific and personalized form of treatment. This is what fascinates and drives me to this field. Helping to cure cancer, localized or metastatic, and improving the quality of a patient’s life are my greatest professional rewards.
