Maria Kaghazian, MD

Dr Maria Kaghazian is board-eligible by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She believes in building strong and long-lasting relationships with her patients. Her areas of interest are strong preventative medicine, diabetes and the latest cardiovascular preventative measures. She believes spending time with her patients and educating them thoroughly will give them the best long-term outcomes. Her areas of research in the past have included cancer and preventative medicine. She is an avid athlete and tennis player who believes personal fitness plays an important role in the overall mental and physical well-being of herself and her patients. She loves the Hudson Valley and its natural beauty and trails.

Why should someone choose you to care for their health?
I have seen how a competent physician can make a difference in patient's lives, as I saw in my own grandmother's struggles with rheumatoid arthritis. I have learned to listen, spend time with patients, get to know them and get to know their concerns and worries. I understand, especially during the pandemic patients are dissatisfied with the amount of time and attention healthcare providers have been giving them in many cases. I saw this firsthand during the pandemic when I was doing my residency. My goal is to create an ongoing relationship with my patients, listen to them and address their concerns and worries. These are my priorities and I think these are qualities the patients are looking for.

What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
Patients must receive adequate care and treatment for their conditions. They must be respected, listened to and cared for professionally and adequately. In turn, I also expect respect. I understand in many instances patients might come across as "difficult". But these are usually signs of underlying anxiety, depression and other worries that the patient has. Every patient deserves to be evaluated medically and psychologically without being judged. In my personal experience if you listen to patients adequately they will always calm and open up, that is your cue to start caring for your patients.

How do you spend your valuable personal time when you’re not caring for patients?
I love working out and going to the gym. In particular unlike intense one-hour interval workouts to increase my heart rate. But most importantly in my time, I love to spend time with my 15-month-old daughter in my family.

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
I have had an interest in internal medicine since my second year of medical school. In my opinion, internal medicine is the mother of all specialties. I have particularly come to appreciate the importance of preventative medicine and how in many instances the overall outcome of patients' mortality and morbidity can be improved with such measures. The greatest reward in my opinion is to see my patients having a good quality of life and be happy and healthy with the best potential for a long, healthy and prosperous life.
