About Philip R. Corvo
Professional Statement
Philip Corvo, MD, is the Chairman of Surgery at Norwalk Hospital, is a nationally recognized surgeon, leader, and educator with over twenty-five years of experience. He is double board-certified in general surgery and critical care surgery. His use of opioid-sparing surgery and tailored antibiotics may help patients have less pain, shorter hospital stays and lower infection rates. Dr. Corvo built a 3-D printing lab that enables him to create models of a patient’s anatomy, which may help improve surgical accuracy and patient safety. He has instructed numerous generations of surgical residents and Physician Assistants. Dr. Corvo and the general surgery team in Norwalk provide care for both general and complex surgical needs, including:
- General emergency surgery (e.g. appendicitis, gallbladder disease, intestinal obstruction, severe soft tissue infection, traumatic injuries)
- Open and laparoscopic approaches to cholecystectomy
- Simple and complex hernia repair
- Da Vinci ® robotic-assisted surgery
- Management of complex surgical wounds
- Colectomy
- Bowel resection
- Anorectal surgery
- Skin and soft tissue surgery
- Appendectomy
- Mass excision and benign tumor removal
- Surgical critical care and trauma
Dr. Corvo is a professor of surgery and the founding president of the Connecticut Surgical Quality Collaborative. He is also a Past President of the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and a Past Governor of the American College of Surgeons
Get To Know Me
Why should someone choose you to care for their health?
I fully believe that the doctor-patient relationship is sacred, and I strive to act as such, 100% of the time. I still wear a suit when going to the ED in the middle of the night.
What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
We are a team from the moment we meet. I expect that we both are open and honest with each other, and there is no such thing as a "silly question".
How do you spend your valuable personal time when you’re not caring for patients?
I enjoy just "being" with my wife and our beautiful cats, as well as woodworking, weight lifting, martial arts and watching and reading sci-fi.
Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
I chose surgery because of the profound and sometimes immediate impact it has on patients; one minute you may have a life-threatening hernia or cancer, and the next minute you do not.

Dr.Corvo is knowledgeable in this field, answers all me and my family’s questions and concerns. Recommends therapeutic interventions has lots and lots of P.A”s that constantly round checking any and every concern. I especially like the patience in explaining to my very concerned husband and brother without seeming perturbed.

Dr. Corvo had requested this appointment as part of my care in the ER for a bowel obstruction caused by scar tissue from previous abdominal surgery. He listened to what I shared about my own understanding of the issues leading up to the hospitalization and added his insight. Should I encounter the same situation again, rather than rely on the ER, to save time and initiate immediate relief, I will call his office first and arrange to drink the contrast to see if that can eliminate the kink in the bowel caused by scar tissue. Dr. Corvo understood my medical problem and suggested appropriate steps to deal with scar tissue. I trust him.

Following my surgery, I really appreciated the thank you card I received via mail, from the doctor and surgical staff.
