Sandhya Kumar, MD

Sandhya Kumar, MD is a family physician, board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Kumar is passionate about supporting her patients to achieve their health goals related to preventive health and chronic disease management. Dr. Kumar is a graduate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine (UABSOM), completed her residencies dual-training in Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, and earned her MPH degree from CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy. Dr. Kumar is originally from Alabama and is thrilled to now call Connecticut her new home for her family.

My goal is to provide the highest quality of care for my patients, match evidence-based medicine with your values as a patient, and do so in a way that also prioritizes your dignity, safety and respect.

What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
My approach to clinical practice is to work closely as a team with my patients, and when present, their caregivers and loved ones. I invite patients to include their loved ones and caregivers who may help to support patients in meeting their healthcare needs and goals outside of the clinic/hospital.

How do you spend your valuable personal time when you’re not caring for patients?
I enjoy spending time with my husband, family, and friends. I am new to Connecticut - tell me your favorite places and where I should visit!

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
I chose to train in Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine because of the focus on providing comprehensive healthcare to patients of all ages, genders, and health conditions. I also appreciate the focus on the impact of population-level interventions to address the social drivers of health and well-being. I most value the opportunity to get to know my patients and to work closely with my patients and their support systems over time.
