Umar R. Ahmad, DO

Dr. Ahmad is a board-certified endocrinologist who completed his internal medicine residency training at the University of Pittsburgh – Mercy Hospital, followed by endocrinology fellowship training at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. He has been practicing since 2018 and sees a wide variety of patients as a general endocrinologist but with a particular interest in the management of diabetes mellitus, thyroid and parathyroid dysfunction, thyroid cancer, as well as transgender care.

Why should someone choose you to care for their health?
I am a compassionate physician. I provide the best care for my patients. This includes offering patients a simple, honest, yet comprehensive analysis of their health conditions along with a collaborative approach to their treatment in an empowering manner.

What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
Patients should expect unrushed, individualized care that is informed by evidence-based medicine. They should also expect prompt, courteous and professional service while in the clinic, both from myself as well as my support staff. I expect patients to be timely and respectful. I do not appreciate patients who expect to unilaterally dictate their care, especially when it goes against best practice.

How do you spend your personal time when you're not caring for patients?
When not practicing medicine, I enjoy running, skiing, traveling and spending time with my family.

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
Endocrinology is a cerebral field that challenges practitioners to combine aspects of biochemistry, cell biology and genetics directly into patient care. With advances in our understanding of human metabolism sure to come in the next few decades, I am excited about the next era of endocrine practice.
