About Yumi Koh
Professional Statement
Inspired by Albert Schweitzer, my early engagement with his work sparked a deep passion for medicine and humanitarian efforts. I graduated with a BA in Studio Art and a BS in Biology, followed by a Master’s in Medical Science and medical education at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. I then pursued a Master’s in Public Health from Yale University to strengthen my focus on public health.
My volunteer experiences in Haiti, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and the Dominican Republic, including during the 2010 Haiti earthquake and cholera outbreak, profoundly shaped my understanding of healthcare disparities. In 2010, I was honored with the American Cancer Society Preventive Medicine Training Award, where I contributed to developing colon cancer screening guidelines and educational materials in collaboration with the American Cancer Society and the CT DPH.
Further training includes the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Summer program at the NIH National Cancer Institute and a specialization in lifestyle medicine, equipping me with advanced skills in cancer prevention and health behavior change. An internship at the WHO in Geneva enhanced my insights into global public health strategies.
After completing a combined Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine residency at Yale-affiliated Griffin Hospital, I was recognized as the Best Preventive Medicine Resident in 2011. I was awarded Preventive Medicine "Resident of the Year" in 2012. Additionally, I received the Earl L. Baker Humanism Award in 2011 for my compassionate, patient-centered care.
These diverse experiences have prepared me to be a highly skilled and empathetic healthcare provider, committed to addressing individual and global health challenges.
Get To Know Me
Why should someone choose you to care for their health?
Choose me as your healthcare provider for a comprehensive, compassionate approach to your health. Specializing in internal medicine with a strong focus on preventive care, I emphasize treating the whole person rather than just individual diseases. I prioritize building trust, listening to your concerns, and respecting your needs. My diverse background, including volunteer work abroad and personal experiences as an immigrant, enriches my ability to understand and support patients from varied backgrounds. I combine clinical expertise with a holistic view, addressing both medical and social determinants of health to achieve optimal outcomes. My commitment to staying current with medical advancements ensures you receive high-quality, evidence-based care.
What is the most important thing your patients should expect from their professional relationship with you? What do you expect from them?
Patients can expect trust, compassion, and personalized care in our professional relationship. I will listen to their concerns, respect their values and preferences, and work collaboratively to achieve their health goals. Open communication and empathy are central, ensuring they feel heard and supported throughout their journey.
In return, I ask patients to be honest and transparent about their medical history, symptoms and lifestyle. They must follow treatment plans, attend appointments and communicate any concerns or changes in their health. Active participation and taking ownership of their health, including integrating discussed plans into their lifestyle, are crucial. Mutual respect, cooperation and a commitment to shared decision-making will strengthen our partnership and promote optimal health outcomes.
How do you spend your valuable personal time when you’re not caring for patients?
When I'm not caring for patients, I enjoy spending quality time with family and friends. I love watching movies, playing musical instruments like the piano and flute, and exploring diverse music genres. Traveling to a new country each year excites me, and I find relaxation in outdoor activities such as hiking and leisurely walks. Creative pursuits, including drawing and painting, also rejuvenate me. Connecting with loved ones over meals and engaging in meaningful conversations are important for my well-being. Balancing relaxation, personal growth, and social connections helps me recharge and stay energized.
