Zachary Aaron Matthay, MD

Dr. Matthay is a vascular surgeon specializing in a wide range of vascular conditions including peripheral vascular disease, aortic aneurysms and dissections, mesenteric vascular disease, and carotid artery disease. He also has expertise in dialysis access surgery and the management of venous and lymphatic disorders. With formal training in both open and minimally invasive endovascular surgical techniques, Dr. Matthay prioritizes a multidisciplinary and individualized approach to patient care, ensuring each treatment plan is tailored to the unique needs of his patients.

Dr. Matthay earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Tufts University before attending the University of California, San Francisco for medical school. His residency in general surgery was pivotal, where he was inspired by his mentors to pursue a career in vascular surgery. He further honed his expertise through a two-year research fellowship focusing on trauma and vascular surgery outcomes, which deepened his appreciation for the diverse skills required in the field. This was followed by a two-year fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at New Presbyterian Hospital, equipping him with the knowledge and experience to effectively treat complex vascular conditions and improve patient outcomes.

How do you spend your valuable personal time when you are not caring for patients?
When I am not working, I spend my time with my wife and our two children exploring the outdoors near and far. I also enjoy long distance running, hiking, and climbing.

Why did you choose your specialty and what is its greatest reward?
I chose vascular surgery because it is a dynamic specialty that allows me to preserve and restore patients’ vascular health utilizing a diverse array of surgical and minimally invasive endovascular techniques. The greatest reward comes from witnessing the tangible improvements in my patients' lives and the meaningful connections we build during their treatment and recovery.
